Due to its long history as a market town, Northampton has many beautiful buildings that reflect its former wealth. The best way to take in the town's architecture is on foot, and there is no better place to start than at the Guildhall.

The hall is a brilliant example of the Neogothic style popular during the late 19th century. It was built in 1861 and the guided tours are the best way to see its amazing interiors. Another jewel in Northampton's glistening crown is 78 Derngate. This house is the only building outside of Scotland to be designed by the famous architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Tours of the house are available and there is even a small restaurant in one of the rooms.

For those more eager to delve deeper into Northampton's rich past, the town is home to some excellent museums and galleries. The Northampton Museum and Art Gallery is a must for all you culture vultures. The museum houses a vast collection of local artifacts, some dating back to Roman times. Another place to scratch up on Northampton's fascinating past is at the Abingdon Park Museum.
